Rhode Island Tattoo Laws

Body piercing and / or tattooing:

The director shall officially announce the rules and regulations to meet requirements of the person performing body piercing or tattooing and also for its establishments.

Requirements includes (but not limited to) premises sanitation wherein this operation to be performed and instrument sterilization.

Registration requirements:

  • In addition to above rules and regulations, registration procedures are also important for the department of health of persons performing this operation (tattooing and / or body piercing).
  • It is required for regular premises inspections wherein tattooing operation is performed, for registration revocation by any unknown person or in case of any violation of the rules and regulations.
  • There is annual registration fee in required amount, which shall be paid by each person performing this operation (tattooing).

Tattooing of minors

Tattooing of minors without parent or guardian permission is a like crime.

Every person who shall tattoo any minor (under the age of 18) shall be punished (less than one year jail) or fined up to $300 or less than $300.
