Laws for Infant safe Haven
- Age Requirements:
Must be fourteen days old or younger.
- One may relinquish the Infant if he or she is:
- Parent of that Infant.
- Parent's designee.
- The following may receive the Infant:
Statute:- § 14-11-102- A fire station
- Hospital
- The Police Department
- A sheriff's office; or
- Any place identified by the department
- Safe Haven Provider Responsibilities:
Statute: - § 14-11-103- No requirement of the parents to give the medical or identifying information.
- May provide any type of medical care if necessary.
- An emergency medical care is must after the child has been left somewhere except hospital. They should deliver that child to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.
- Parental Rights:
Statute: - §- § 14-11-103; 14-11-105- The department should provide a potential adoptive home to the children.
- In case, neither parents reach the child (within three months), then the department should file a petition for parental termination rights.
