How to access adoption records?
- Obtain non identifying information:
Non-identifying information is available to adoptive parents, and legal guardians of adoptee or the adopted adults. Birth parents may also provide the updated information in files.
- Obtain identifying information:
Adoption registry provides the identifying information.
- Obtain an original birth certificate:
An adoptee have to petition the court in which the adoption was finalized to receive.
- Use of the adoption registry:
Each agency should maintain the adoption registry as per the State law. Adopted adults of the age 18 or more than that can receive identifying information if the birth parents have filed their consent with the registry.
If the consent is not available in the file, the birth parents will be contacted for the consent. If consent is on file identifying information regarding the adopted adult can be made available to adoptee birth parents and siblings.
If consent is not on file, then to release information to the birth parents searching will be done for the adopted adult of age 18 or more than that so as to obtain consent.
