How to access adoption records?

  • Obtain non identifying information:

    This information can be accessed by the legal guardian of the child as well as the adoptive parents or the adopted adults whose age is 18 years or more.

  • Obtain identifying information:

    Adoption registry provides the identifying information.

  • Using adoption registry:

    Adoption registry is maintained by the 'State Department of Human Services' for the DHS placements. Registries also maintained by some of the licensed agencies.

    The DHS registry is just like a shared consent registry as in that both parties registered prior releasing the identifying information. One hour of counseling is there for those, who requesting the information prior releasing the information.

  • Providing information:

    Any of the following persons can give the additional information.

    • Adopted adults of age 21 or more than that
    • The immediate, adult relatives of age 21 or more than that of a deceased adopted adult
    • Birth parents

  • Obtain the original birth certificate:

    An adoptee have to formally request the court where the adoption of that adoptee was finalized.
