How to access adoption records?
- Obtain non identifying information:
One can get the non identifying information from birth parents, adopted adults of age 19 or more than that and also from the adoptive parents.
- Obtain identifying information:
If the birth parent are ready to disclose the identifying information with consent under oath, then the adopted adult of age 19 or more can receive identifying information as well as a copy of the original birth certificate.
If the consent is not found in records then adopted adult of age 19 or more may petition the court for releasing the identifying information about himself or herself. After that a confidential intermediary is assigned by the court to contact the birth parents for getting the consent.
In case if the birth parents are not available by any reason and can not do consent, the court itself will take a decision about releasing identifying information.
The court may grant consent to the petition for releasing identifying information but with a restricted or prohibited contact of the parties.
- Obtain an original birth certificate:
In Alabama an adopted adult of age 19 or more, has original birth certificate on file but it is sealed at the Center for Health Statistics. He/she may obtain a copy of that certificate and the other documents with the original record but in the non-certified form.
